Abstract The transient electromagnetic method was used to detect goaf and collapse areas in the Xiangyuan coal field. The effectiveness tests on the method were made both in the known goaf and non-mined out area. The author found that the low resistivity anomaly in the working area is the reflection of the waterlogged goaf. In combination with data available, the author has judged that the mined-out depth of the minable coal seam (No.3 coal seam) is 144~324 m, being relatively shallow on the eastern side and comparatively deep on the wesetern side, which is consistent with the dip of the coal seam. Horizontal section of apparent resistivity was made at the burial depth of 260m in No.3 coal seam. In combination with anomaly conditions along various survey lines, the author inferred the limits of the goaf, and preliminarily found out the factors responsible for such geohazards as cracks in house and land subsidence.
