Abstract The feasibility tests of varied geophysical methods determined the physical character differences between the shell bank and the surrounding media. Data obtained from the Rayleigh wave survey and the reflection wave optimum offset survey were comparatively verified to detect the mode of occurrence of the shell bank in the working area and infer the boundary, buried depth and thickness of the shell bank. These data are very valuable for the protection of the shell bank in the planning of the new urban area of the Gangdong District.
