Abstract The magnetotelluric responses of vertical dykes have been theoretically deduced. First, their analytical expressions of apparent resistivity within the high resistance basement and the low resistance basement were deduced under E-polarization and H-polarization respectively. Then through programming and calculating, lots of graphs were drawn. Finally, careful analysis of these graphs led to the summarization of many characteristics of apparent resistivity curves for magnetotelluric responses of dykes.
