Abstract Deep soil and its geochemical significance in multi-objective investigation are hot topics among environmental scientists. The author compared 54 indexes and their geochemical distribution characteristics in surface soil and deep soil of Dongting plain and hillock area, and studied the element content variation from natural differentiation and anthropogenic influence in the pedogenic process. With deep soil as the reference, the author obtained regional soil geochemical background value and baseline and proposed a method for the classification of surface soil pollution levels.
