Abstract In the light of the high complexity and difficulty met by such traditional coal field fire area exploration methods as high accuracy magnetic method and isotope radon method in the actual reconnaissance, we need other more effective exploration methods. The authors utilized the self-potential method to delineate the boundary of the fire area, which was consistent with the drilling result. It is shown that the self-potential method is a fairly effective means in the complex environment of the fire area.
