Abstract In view of the situation that heavy metal content of "five kinds of traditional Chinese medicinal materials in Pan'an" exceeds the standard, the authors carried out systematic "rock-soil-medicinal material" research and, based on agro-geological environmental survey, investigated geographical environment of Pan'an. The results show that rocks have experienced strong eluviation in the weathering and soil-forming process, which results in the loss of Ca and Mg and enrichment of Cd and Cu. Soil acidification is obvious, and soil pH values tend to decrease from soil parent layer, leached layer to plough layer. The excessive Cu and Cd in the traditional Chinese medicinal material results from relative accumulation of Cu and Cd in the surface soil and the increased soil acidity.
