Abstract A number of problems are discussed in this paper concerning the determination and interpretation of the oil and gas geochemical anomalies. It is emphatically pointed out that the characteristics of the statistical distribution and spatial distribution of geochemical data should be fully understood when the oil and gas geochemical anomalies are determined, and appropriate methods should be adopted to determine anomalies. The interpretation and evaluation of the oil and gas geochemical anomalies should be combined with the basic geological data, and systematic train of thought and methods of evaluation ought to used to reveal the link between the geochemical anomalies and hydrocarbon distribution.
