Abstract The base terrace of the Qingjiang red bed basin in central Jiangxi was studied to detect stratigraphic structure and aquifer characteristics by such means as integrated application of composite profiling, induced polarization and resistivity sounding. The optimum well site and the reasonable well completion technology were chosen and, as a result, a well was drilled which could produce more than 5 000 T/d. Pumping tests show that both the quality and the quantity of the water meet the requirements. Hydrogeophysical exploration indicates that the integrated application of the electrical methods in search for water is very effective in the study area.
