Abstract The application of geophysical technique to advanced prediction during tunneling has the advantages of high speed and accuracy. In addition, all the data obtained can be dealt with and displayed in time. The Bajiaoxi tunnel in Shaoyang-Huaihua section of Hunan along the Shanghai-Ruili Expressway is given as an example. We can be accurately informed of the geological conditions before tunneling. Such information is very important in arranging the tunneling methods and reducing risks in work.
