Abstract Sampling density in geochemical mineral exploration is controlled by such factors as geochemical landscape, stream distribution and geomorphic evolution. Fractal area density, drainage area ratio and altitude coefficient can reveal the forming mechanism of these three aspects. As the foundation of the sampling density theory, the factor model of sampling density could guide the formulation of sampling density and sampling layout in geochemical mineral exploration.
