Abstract Geophysical and geochemical prospecting is faced with a new task, andfor its fulfilment the geodetic survey seems to be a key technique. This pa-per describes the basic principle of the global positioning system and dealswith its advantages relative to the conventional surveying means, indicating.that it should pass into a major tool in geophysical and geochemical geodeticsurvey. Some suggestions are also put forward concerning the further researchand application of this technique.
