Abstract In order to improve the accuracy of the identification of sources of potential fields with the continuous wavelet transform method (CWT), this paper deals with the effect of noise and the choice of scaling factor. Firstly, the principle of the identification of sources of potential fields with the CWT method is presented. Secondly, the method is used to identify the sources from potential field data with noise of various levels, and the effect of noise is analyzed. Lastly, the effect of suppressing noise by CWT is analyzed, and the choice of scaling factor is studied. The results of identification of the sources of synthetic data and field data indicate that the noise can decrease the accuracy of identification result. but the choice of the scaling factor can suppress the noise and improve the accuracy of the identification result.
