Abstract Goaf is bringing serious harm to human's production and life, and therefore detection of goaf has become an important research topic. This paper describes geophysical characteristics of the goaf and geophysical methods (electrical method, seismic method, radioactive method) for detection of goaf in combination with practical examples, and discusses the research status and existing problems of the above three methods as well as the research and development trends in future.
