Abstract Based on seismic attributes of the time window, the authors studied the methods of first arrival wave pickup by using energy ratio. A comparison was made in theory and application effects of statistical energy ratios between such means as solid, rolling and changing time windows. The results show that the effects of solid and rolling time windows are relatively poor, with considerable errors existent in the process of picking some special points. When the transform length of the time window statistical method is employed, the event of the first arrival curve becomes more smooth, and the abnormal points are greatly reduced, thus effectively improving the pickup accuracy.
