Abstract Based on the datum value and heavy metal content of surface soil, the authors made an evaluation of the pollution degree of surface soil in the city proper of Luoyang. Accelerating human activities and industrialization have caused heavier and heavier environmental pollution and increasing degeneration of soil quality. Modern industrial production and ancient human activities seem to be the main factors responsible for local severe pollution in the city proper of Luoyang, whereas natural geological actions have been very insignificant.
