Abstract The existence of underground mined-out areas poses a grave threat to mine production and engineering construction, and hence the survey of mined-out area has become an important subject. Based on the engineering projects the authors had taken part in, this paper described in detail three techniques (crosswell seismism, ground penetrating radar GRP) and shallow seismic reflection method) for detecting underground mined-out areas and analyzed their advantages and disadvantages.
