Abstract Mercury pollution in a certain large city of Guangdong Province is spatially related to dense population and crowded factories. In the longitudinal direction of the soil, the pollution is heavy at the surface and becomes lower downward. The different phases of mercury are also somewhat related to environmental materials (organic matter, grain sizes of soil and pH values). The high mercury contents lead to the high mercury concentration in the atmosphere.
