Abstract This paper deals with the basic principle of applying trace element technique to near-surface oil and gas geochemical exploration, the classification of trace element observational methods, the oil-indicating significance of the criteria, the advance in the application of the trace element method to oil and gas exploration, and the development trend of the trace element geochemical researches.
