Abstract According to the hydrocarbon analyses of crude oil samples an offshore oil field in China and the sea bed sediments just over this field, it is proved that the advanced technology can be used in such aspects of offshore geochemical prospecting as the correlations between oil and oil and between oil and sea bed sediments, the identification of hydrocarbon characteristics, and the estimation of traps.
