Abstract Based on the propagation theory of the longitudinal wave in the pile, the present paper presents a technique for determining such parameters as back and forth time of reflection wave and apparent reflection coefficient. After some correction of the apparent reflection coefficient, the extent of wave impedance differences of the reflection interfaces can be analysed quantitatively and, on such a basis, the defective position of the pile body can be detected.
