Abstract Since 1991, some geologists of IGGE in cooperation with Tobacco Department of Henan Agricultural University have carried out experimental work on applying minor eleme nts to raise the output of tobacco and improve its quality in Xuchang County, an important tobacco-producing area in Henan Province. The results of the tests indicated that, after minor element fertilizers were sprayed onto leaves of the tobacco, the output of tobacco obviously increased, and the per mu yield increased by 27.6% on the average, with the highest reaching 57.7%. The results also showed that, after application of minor element fertilizers, the qua lity grade of tobacco was remarkably raised; the superior and medium-grade tobacco increa sed by 4.68% and 12.3% whereas low-grade tobacco decreased by 17.6%. The tests showed that, after application of the fertilizers, nicotine and carbohydrate contents evidently increa sed whereas total nitrogen and chlorine somewhat decreased, with their contents close to their standard values in good tobacco. If this technique can be extended to whole Henan Province, the economic benefits will be considerable.
