Abstract The seismic tomographic imagery has begun to be used on a trial basis in lots ofdepartments undertaking engineering survey and ore resource exploration. As a result, papers gui-ding the work in this aspect is urgently needed. This paper introduces comprehensively principlesof seismic tomographic imagery, data collection techniques and theories and methods for imagereconstruction. With an example of its successful application, the paper illustrates the effective-ness of this method. As a new geophysical prospecting method, the seismic torao?raphic imagerystill has many problems to be solved in its application, such as the reconstruction of the nonli-near image. A detailed discussion is made concerning these existing problems and the steps tosolve them.
