Abstract Collapsing pillars constitute one of the major obstacles in mechanized comprehensive coal mining in North China; therefore, it is of great significance to detect the location and distribution of collaping pillars in the working area before comprehensive mining. This paper introduces the seismic tomographic imaging method for detecting collapsing pillars in coal mines, and makes ima ging test with physical simulation data. It is proved that the seismic tomo graphic imaging method can be used to pinpoint collapsing pillars in coal mines.
