Abstract Environmental geochemical studies were conducted for surficial and bottomsoils in an area of 100km2 in the west of Shenyang City proper. Soil back-ground values of fifteen elements in this district were obtained by means ofquite a few statistic techniques; environmental quality of soil was evaluatedaccording te single element assessment indices and integrated assessmentindices, and it is considered that there exists severe contamination from suchheavy metal elements as Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Sb and Hg. The contaminated areatends to expand progressively from the upper to lower reaches of the Zhangshiirrigation canal, and such contamination results mainly from long-time sewageirrigation. It is also ascertained that bottom mud is a sort of new secondary contamination source.
