Abstract Based on an analysis of the present situation of solid ore resources, thispaper points out that reconnaissance and ore prospecting task is very heavyin China and that geophysical prospecting has proved to be quite effective inChina in these years. The geophysical technique of China, although somewhatlower in level compared with that abroad, shows its own distinctive featuresand has already reached international level in some aspects. In order to meet the demand of prospecting for concealed deposits, deepblind deposits, deposits not easy to be recognized and deposits of new types,it is necessary to carry forward geophysical prospecting to a new stage, i. e.geophysical prospecting of the second generation. During this stage, advancedmethods and techniques are to be used and objective geologic-geophysicalmodels will be applied to guide train of thought of the whole work. In thisway, geophysical prospecting will be carried out systematically and morecomplicated geological problem call be solved. The paper deals with five aspe-cts of requirements for geophysical prospecting of the second generation andits characteristics. The attainment of the aim of the second-generation geophysical prospe-cting for solid ore resources requires greater progress and breakthrough advan-ce in methods and techniques. The paper suggests twelve topics for futureresearch, which cover three classes: the improvement of the available methods;the study of new prinoiples, methods and parameters;the application of inte-grated methods.
