Abstract The present paper consists of two parts. The first part gives a beief review on the gravity prospecting work carried out in recent years by Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resouces, indicating the advances achieved in seven aspects. The regional gravity survey conducted since the end of 1970's has attained especially remarkab'e achievements, such as the establishment of the unified base points net, the development of the height measurement technique, the design of gravimeter with constant-temperature device for long-distance measurement, the investigation into multifunctional data bank, and the formulation of technical stipulations for field work and data arrangement suitable for regional gravity prospecting. All this shows a good and encouraging beginning in the nationwide regional gravity survey conducted at the scale of 1:200,000 and 1: 1, 000,000. In addition, fairly good results have also been obtained in gravity reconnaissance and detailed exploration in search for ore and in some other fields. The second part of this paper is devoted to the prospects for the gravity prospecting work in future. It is proposed that the application scope of this method should be expanded, that the gravity prospecting technique should be further developed, and that the gravity map-compilation as well as data interpretation and application should be extensively carried out following the fundamental solution of the problem of field work technique. Atentative discussionhas also been made on some important concepts such as the Bouguer gravity anomalies, the problem of "groups", the resolution of regional anomalies and local anomalies, and the inverse selection technique of man-machine dialogue, which might be of some value to researchers of geophysical prospecting.
