Abstract Relatively crowded paleomagnetic sampling and systematic measuring weredone in three drill holes within Dianchi Lake Basin; as a result, a fairly perfectmagnetic polarity profile was obtained for Cenozoic strata of this area over 500min thickness. From top to bottom, three polarity zones were distinguished,i. e., Burong, Songshan and Gaosi. In Songshan negative polarity zone, four po-larity subzones, called Jialamilu, Dianchi, Aoduwei and Liuniwang respectively, were differentiated; in Gaosi positive polarity zone, two polarity subzones, na-mely Kaina and Mengma, were separated; in Burong positive polarity zone, 6-9 momentary variations in geomagnetic polarity were recognized.Based on the above-mentioned research results and taking into account suchaspects of information as sporopollen, Ostracoda and Gastropoda fossils and 14C dating, the authors have reached the conclusion that, according to the interna-tional chronological table of geomagnetic polarity, the Late Cenezoic strata inDianchi Lake Basin should include the whole Quaternary as well as Late Plio-cene sediments. Furthermore, they have divided this suite of strata and madean approximate correlation.
