Abstract Marine controlled-source electromagnetic (MCSEM) method is an important geophysical tool in ocean oil and gas resource exploration. As a key device of MCSEM observing system, the ocean bottom electromagnetic (OBEM) receiver is decisive in marine observation. As for a newly developed OBEM receiver, comparison test is necessary to evaluate its performance before it is used to conduct data acquisition in sea. Because of the high cost and difficulties of ocean tests, an alternative field comparison test is designed in this paper. A series of tests including channel consistency, instrument consistency and measuring result repeatability were carried out with existing MT observing system providing comparing results. The results obtained by testing data analysis can provide a basis for performance evaluation of OBEM receivers.
