Abstract The audio magnetotelluric method has been widely used in the field of groundwater exploration both in China and abroad. In this paper, the groundwater exploration in a certain area of Northwest China was taken as an example. The theoretical basis of the method was elaborated and its application effect was discussed. As the equipment of audio magnetotelluric method is relatively light in weight, the exploration depth is relatively large, and hence the results are fairly satisfactory. Therefore this technology has a broad application prospect in groundwater exploration.
