Abstract Dipole method can be used to detect the leakage on the impermeable membrane. The thickness of the medium on the impermeable membrane and the distance from the detection point to the membrane will influence the sensitivity of dipole detection. Based on the principle of high voltage DC leakage detection method, the authors analyzed the influence of medium's thickness on the detection. The results show that it is difficult to detect the leakage by moving the dipole on the medium surface when the thickness of the medium increases, but if the dipole can approximate the membrane, the dipole can detect the obvious potential abnormalities when it is approaching the leak.
