Abstract Nowadays, goaf in the small coal mine(GSCM)is dangerous to resources integrated mining. Therefore, it is important to detect this kind of GSCM with suitable seismic geophysical method. In this paper, numerical simulation of GSCM was conducted on the basis of model design, and the response characteristics of GSCM in seismic section were analyzed. It is discovered that the reflection seismic waves phase axis is discontinuous in seismic section when the scale of GSCM is small, whereas the reflection seismic waves phase axis assumes "pseudosyncline" feature when more GSCM are connected together. Two cases of GSCM in Jinchen and Hongtong of Shanxi Province were studied, with satisfactory result achieved.
