Abstract In view of the existence of quite a few house cracks in villages and periphery of the surveyed area, the authors tried to find out whether there exists a goaf and whether the cracks are caused by the goaf. Data obtained by transient electromagnetic method were used in combination with geological and digging conditions of the mining district to infer the influence range of the goaf. It is held that the cracks in houses in villages and periphery are caused mainly by the goaf.
