Abstract The distinct difference of magnetic properties between magnetite ores and strongly magnetic volcanic rocks lies in the fact that magnetite ores mainly have induced magnetization, while strongly magnetic volcanic rocks are dominated by remanent magnetization. A method that could allow the remote determination of insitu magnetic properties of sources by using natural geomagnetic variations has been recommended in this paper. Comments are also made on several methods related to interpreting magnetic anomalies caused by remanent magnetization.
