Abstract Using quite a few methods such as the interpretation of the remote sensing geology, the analysis of the trace elements in soil, the survey of the gas radon in soil and the observation of the field outcrop, the authors identified 22 concealed faults in Jiandi area of Shifang. These faults can be classified into three groups, striking NNW, NEE and approximately EW respectively. Influenced by nappe rising of Guankou fault, most of the concealed faults show obvious tensoshear activities, and zones of waterbearing fractures are well developed. In this paper, hydrogeochemistry of oil and gas and regularity of groundwater activities were used to investigate the configuration relationship between the fractures, cap rocks and groundwater in this area. The authors hold that there exists some potential in search for gas reservoirs of the hydrodynamic trap in some areas of the monoclinic belt and in exploring deep gas reservoirs in the YunxiXujiachang noseshaped anticline, in spite of the fact that the overall conditions of the oil and gas preservation in this area are poor.
