Abstract An analysis of the composition of soil minerals in the Hetao area shows that the main arenaceous components are quartze, feldspar and calcite, whereas the clay minerals are composed of illite, chlorite and kaolinite. The contents of various minerals are different from each other. Quartz and feldspar are relatively high in sandy soils, while clay minerals are comparatively high in clay soils.
