Abstract Sampling procedure is a key to get a reliable observation in the application of nano-scale particle survey to mineral exploration in overburden areas. An effective sampling device and an appropriate sampling amount constitute the major controlling factors for successful accumulation of nano-scale particles. Liquid collectors and dynamic sampling were tested to select the sampling device, layout and sampling time. The results show that the man-powered sampling device can produce much better response than the battery-driven sampler and that, to get satisfactory anomalies, we should totally collect more than 9 liters of pumping gases at each sampling site. It can be concluded that the materials the authors collected are nano-scale particles rather than real gases, and that greater power is needed to release them from the soil.
