Abstract This paper recounts the discovery of mineral deposits in cold eluvial and glaciofluvial sendimentary overburden areas in West Tianshan Mountains by means of mercury vapor survey. The test started with the mineralization section in the periphery of the given volcanic copper deposit and the IPanomalies in the glaciofluvial sendimentary and alluvial thick overburden area, and then extended to vast areas, which yielded fairly good geological effect. Encouraging results have been obtained, which prove that mercury vapor survey is a rapid, economical and effective method in high and cold mountain areas, which hence deserves popularization.
