Abstract This paper elucidates the basic principle of the high-frequency (broad-band) elastic wave reflection continuous profiling of land minimum offset distance (called land soar method for short) as well as the technique for its realization, and gives examples of its successful application in such aspects as the shallow-layer high resolution exploration, the detection of karst and other caves, the detection and prediction of unfavorble conditions ahead along the heading face of the tunnel, and the detection of extremely thin layers. This method has many merits such as high resolution ratio, the capacity of avoiding lots of disturbing waves, high energy of reflection waves, effective detection of karst and caves, and simple and easily recognizable images.
