Abstract The ground gamma energy spectrometer used at present has many shortcomings; it is not satisfactory in function and fails to produce data and related maps in time; its adjustment is difficult and its operation is complicated; an additional radioactive reference source must be available to stablize spectra. Aimed at eliminating these demerits, this paper suggests employing the microcomputerized ground gamma spectrometer of PC-1500 pocket computer system. With this instrument, the integration can be realized for data collecting and recording in field ground gamma energy spectral survey, data printing and map compilation as well as data storage and transfer. As shown by tests, this instrument is easy to operate and control, its efficiency is high, and it can rapidly pyovide data and related geological information. This instrument is therefore suitable for ground gamma spectral survey in field.
