Abstract The difference in the velocity of underground media elastic waves is closely related to the geotechnical mechanism characteristics of the media, and the Rayleigh wave velocity is very close to its shear wave velocity. Therefore, the application of the Rayleigh wave exploration technique to the stratification of the underground media has its obvious advantages. In the initial stage of the geotechnical engineering exploration, the Rayleigh wave technique can be used to divide strata and geological structures which have evident differences, whereas in the detailed exploration stage, this technique can be employed to detect the bedrock buried depth and the fill thickness. The application results are satisfactory.
